Off the southern coast of Africa, lies the island country of Mauritius. This dreamy tropical paradise is famous for its beaches, luxurious resorts, and vibrant nightlife. Mauritius is a destination that not many travellers know about and is truly a hidden gem. I was lucky enough to visit and DJ in Mauritius back in July of 2019, and had the best time.
Here is everything you need to know about visiting Mauritius.
Where to Stay
During my trip to Mauritius, I stayed at the beautiful Baystone Boutique Hotel & SPA in Grand Baie. This upscale hotel is beachfront and provides everything you need for a perfect getaway. It has a chic aesthetic that features spacious and bright guest rooms, a pool, and incredible service. The atmosphere here is so peaceful and, in the evening, you can listen to the ocean rustle as live music plays in the background. The property has a restaurant that serves local flavours, and there is a sushi bar. The hotel also provides a variety of boat tours that allow you to take in the beauty of the surrounding bay. I loved staying at the Baystone Boutique & SPA and it was a dream to wake up to an incredible view every morning.
What to Do
There is so much to do in Mauritius, and thankfully most of the attractions are outdoors, so you take full advantage of the warm weather. The beaches here are picturesque with white sand and turquoise waters. Trou aux Biches beach is especially memorable and is considered one of the best on the island. I also visited Gris Gris Beach, which was about an hour from the hotel, but well worth it. You can’t take a trip to Mauritius without checking out Grand Bassin, a crater lake located in the mountainous region of Savanne. The lake is the most sacred Hindu place on the island and there are stunning temples nearby that are dedicated to Hindu gods. I also recommend hiking to see the 7 Cascades, which consists of seven stunning waterfalls that make for an ideal photo op. And of course, one of my favourite experiences in Mauritius was DJing at OMG Nightclub – the crowd was amazing!
Where to Eat
Mauritius is known for its fresh seafood and for good reason – it is so delicious. I ate at some wonderful places on my trip, and one of the great things about dining in Mauritius, is many restaurants offer live evening entertainment. I loved starting the day off with breakfast at the hotel’s B Restaurant because let’s face it, there’s nothing better than breakfast with a gorgeous ocean view. I also had a lovely lunch at Trou aux Biches beach where I tried Mine Frites, a traditional Mauritius dish that is made of fried noodles, fried eggs, chicken, and soy sauce- it was so good!
Visiting Mauritius was one of the most relaxing trips of my life and I can’t wait to go back one day. Is Mauritius one of your must-see destinations?
